Migration Guide From Magento 1 To Magento 2

Migration is not an easy process, you need to have a vast amount of technical knowledge to proceed with the migration. To avoid any data loss we will suggest you hire Magento 2 developer. However, we have prepared a list of guidelines and the guidelines will help you successfully migrate and avoid any issues related to data loss.

Before you start: Consider upgrade

Migration is a smart decision to make a great change and prepare your site for the next level of growth. Consider whether you are designing a new website with more hardware or a more advanced topology with better-caching tiers, etc.

Step 1: Review extensions on your current site

  • What extensions are installed?

  • Have you determined if you require all these extensions on your new website or not? You can remove some old extensions if not required anymore.

  • Have you studied if Magento's new versions will also support the extension you have? (Visit Commerce Marketplace to find the latest versions or contact Magento 2 migration service provider)

  • What database assets from your extensions do you want to migrate?

Step 2: Make Magento 2 store ready for migration

  • Set up a Magento 2 hardware system using topology and configuration that at least matches your existing Magento 1 system

  • Install Magento 2. x and the Data Migration Tool on a system that fulfills the Magento system requirements.

  • Make some custom adjustments to the Data Migration Tool code in case you do not want to migrate some data (like sales rules, CMS Pages, etc.) or want to restore your Magento customization during migration. Read the Data Migration tools and get an understanding of them like how migration works from the inside.

Step 3: Testing

Before you begin migration in the production environment, going through all the migration steps in your testing environment will be beneficial for the migration process.

In such migration testing, follow these steps:

  • Create a clone of your Magento 1 store to a staging server

  • Fully migrate the copied Magento 1 store to Magento 2

  • Simply test your new store

 Start your Migration

  1. Make sure that the Data Migration Tool has a network connection to connect to Magento 1 and Magento 2 databases. Open the connected ports in your firewall

  2. Use the Data Migration Tool to migrate settings and websites.

  3. Replicate your Magento 1 media files to Magento 2

  4. Use the Data Migration Tool to copy your bulk data from Magento 1 database to Magento 2 database.

  5. If you want to migrate extensions to have data, you will need to install these extensions adjusted for Magento 2. In case the extensions have a different configuration in Magento 2 database, use the mapping files that have Data Migration Tool.

  6. Reindex all Magento 2.x indexers. For details, see the Configuration guidelines.
